My Friend Wanted to Start Trading… But Didn't Know Where to Begin
A few months ago, a close friend called me.
He said, “I want to start trading… but I have no idea where to begin. Should I just download an app and start buying stocks?”
I smiled.
Because that’s exactly how most people think.
I told him, “Wait. Don’t rush. Let’s take it step by step.”
We sat down. I explained what trading really is — not gambling, but making calculated decisions based on analysis.
He was surprised to know there are different types of trading — intraday, swing, positional, and algo.
He asked, “Which one is best?”
I said, “There’s no best. There’s only what suits you.”
So we identified his risk level and time availability.
Next, we opened a Demat and trading account with a trusted broker.
He didn’t know you need two accounts — one to buy/sell, and one to hold shares.
He started learning — not just from YouTube videos but also through proper beginner-level courses.
We discussed technical charts, basic indicators, and why companies matter in the long run.
I told him something important:
“Before trading with real money, practice on virtual platforms. Build confidence first.”
So he practiced.
Made mistakes.
Lost fake money.
But gained real experience.
Finally, he started trading with just ₹5,000.
Now, months later, he doesn’t just trade — he trades with confidence.
Not to get rich overnight.
But to build skill, discipline, and long-term control.
You know Rakesh Jhunjhunwala? He started his stock market journey in 1985 with just ₹5,000. That’s it. But he had strong belief in India’s growth. So he studied companies, picked the right stocks, and stayed patient.
One of his best investments was Titan. He bought it when it was just ₹3 per share. Everyone thought he was crazy. But he believed in the company. After many years, Titan went up more than 10,000%! That one stock made him thousands of crores.
He didn’t become rich overnight. He stayed invested even when the market was down. No panic, no hurry. Slowly and steadily, he became India’s Big Bull.
His story shows us — start small, believe in what you’re doing, and think long term. Trading or investing is not a shortcut. It’s a journey. And Rakesh Jhunjhunwala proved it.”
